Job description

Responsible to: Volunteer Manager

Based In: Bradford

Time Commitment: 3-4 hours per month for two years

Purpose of role
An independent Visitor is a responsible adult volunteer who acts as a positive role model to a young person looked after by a local authority. The young person has little or no contact with their parents. The IV will meet once a month with the young person to strive to be a positive influence in their life by celebrating success, encouraging them to express any concerns, and influencing them to join activities that meet their hobbies, interests, and needs. The visit may involve just a friendly chat or it could be that you support them to gain access to the relevant education/ health paths, access to physical/ social activities, or taking them to the cinema or for a walk.

It is an unsettling period for a young person with little or no family network so a friendly face and a positive role model could mean the difference in encouraging a young person to follow a productive life path compared to a route that is unhealthy which could potentially lead to a lifetime of problems.

Independent visitors are matched carefully so that outcomes can be as fruitful as possible in the young person’s life. As a volunteer, you would be there as a totally independent person and to represent them with the same tenacity you would as if it was your own family.

Volunteers are fully supported and receive regular supervision. All volunteer expenses are reimbursed. All volunteers are required to be over 18 years and complete an enhanced DBS check.

You don't need to be an expert, empathy matters more than academic qualifications or experience, and we're keen to hear from people of all ages and walks of life.
