The due date of October 2020 for the implementation of the Liberty Protection Safeguards, which will replace the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), has been delayed because of COVID-19.

Care Minister Helen Whately has said the new date will be after April 2022, to give more time for councils, care providers and the NHS to prepare.

The LPS will provide legal authorisation for depriving people of their liberty in England and Wales, for the purposes of receiving health or social care services, where the person lacks capacity to consent to their confinement.
