Purpose of role

Child protection is part of the safeguarding process and focuses on the protection of children and young people who have been identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. Advocacy Focus will support children over the age of 12 who are the subject of multi-agency child protection plans. The Independent Advocate (IA) will champion the child’s rights and ensure that every child’s voice is heard, valued and at the centre of any decisions which affect their lives.  This will involve building relationships with children and young people on a 1:1 basis and ensuring that support is available at appropriate and relevant times. The provision of individual community advocacy will support each child to move forward and achieve the best possible outcomes.

Key tasks

  • Provide individual and confidential casework support to children and young people going through child protection proceedings.
  • Provide advocacy for children prior to and during their child protection conferences and reviews.
  • Support each child or young person to express their views and feelings, help them to understand their rights and be involved in decision making.
  • Attend child protection conferences and reviews, attend meetings with the child/young person to help them represent their views and opinions.
  • Liaise and negotiate with other agencies concerning specific cases and on general issues as and when required.

Please note that the salary advertised is for full time hours. If this post is less than 37 hours per week, the salary will be pro-rata.
