"I was in my final year studying Criminology & Sociology at UCLAN when it was suggested I gain some voluntary experience in mental health wards to help me with my future career potential. I saw an opportunity with Advocacy Focus on the do-it.org.uk website and thought that it was an fascinating company doing valuable work, not only in the field of mental health but in other areas of health and social care.

"I contacted the Volunteer Manager and was told about the training programme, which was really helpful when I started to work on the mental health wards in Burnley General Hospital helping to facilitate drop-in sessions. The Advocacy Focus Independent Advocates were really welcoming and friendly and helped to show me the ropes, i was never made to feel like a volunteer but a member of the team. Once confident in my role, I then provided the triage service to ward inpatients every alternate Thursday for four hours and patients really seemed to welcome me as a friendly face that was there to support them.

"I enjoyed my volunteer role and the support of the Advocacy Focus team so much that when a role as an Independent Advocate became available, I jumped at the chance to apply. I have now been working here for nearly a year and look forward to a productive and rewarding career in advocacy."
