Advocacy is a statutory support service for adults with mental health and/or capacity needs within health and social care services. Here at Advocacy Focus, we can provide Generic Advocates to support service users across a wide range of day-to-day matters.

We are an Independent Advocacy provider that seeks to encourage and facilitate the empowerment of individuals through the provision of high quality independent advocacy services, which are free at point of delivery.

We have a wide range of expertise in providing a service to people with learning disabilities, mental health issues, people who lack capacity to instruct, carers, people with dementia and many more.  Our service benefits any person that has a health or social care related problem, or health complaint, particularly those who are disadvantaged by society and need independent support to make their views heard.

Benefits of Generic Advocacy

The main benefit of advocacy for the service user is having someone by their side, helping them to be as fully involved in decision making as possible to ensure the best outcome for their lives. The benefit to professionals is being more able to involve the service user's views in care planning.

Our Advocates can:

  • Help the service user be involved in decisions that matter to them
  • Help them to understand the process
  • Answer any questions they may have
  • Help them to stand up for their rights
  • Help them to speak up for what they want
  • Be their voice if they are having trouble finding it

Our Advocates can’t:

  • Make decisions for the service user
  • Tell them what they would do
  • Help them with money, benefits or legal advice

Generic Advocacy may also be referred to as case work, community advocacy or short-term advocacy.

Our generic advocacy service is currently very limited and only available via a small number of local contracts.  It is an area of advocacy that we are keen to develop so we can achieve our mission of ‘Advocacy for All’.  If you can help support us to achieve this and provide a service for people when they face their most challenging times, then please donate here.
